Places I like to go on the internet.

There is so much good stuff on the internet. So much that is educational. So much that is interesting. So much that is fun. So much that is uplifting.

I thought some of you might enjoy knowing some of the things I like to do. Maybe you will find some interesting things here for yourself as well.

  • Christian Places on the Internet
    1. The International Mission Board is the missionary organization we work through. Here you can find out all about what Southern Baptists do in world missions.

    2. Baptist Press is our denomination's press agency. Here you can learn much of what is going on within the Southern Baptist Convention.

    3. The Southern Baptist Sunday School Board is the agency of our denomination that produces programs and literature. They also run a chain of bookstores.

    4. Crosssearch is a search engine that is geared only to Christian subjects. They have it all here. If you need to look up something about anything Christian, this is the place to start.

    5. Kingdom Surf and Christian Net Surfing are two more places you can go if you just want to surf the internet in a Christian environment.

    6. Because of my radio show, I spend a certain amount of time looking up information on various Contemporary Christian Music artists. There are two sites I like to go to for this. The first is the Christian Artists List. The second one is the CMP Artists Directory.

  • Latvia on the Internet
    1. The best place I know to find information on Latvia is through my web server Latnet. There are probably a few other addresses I could give you, but most all of them are referenced somehow through Latnet. They even list the other internet servers in Latvia. Here you can find English news of all kinds, as well as information about business and government.

    2. The Baltic Times is an English language newspaper that is published in Riga. It covers news of all three Baltic states and is one of the best resources for English language current events around.

    3. Here in Riga we have an Internet Club. This is the place where my home page is located and also has a few unique resources.

  • Our Hometown
    1. The best source of news about Tallahassee is the local newspaper, The Tallahassee Democrat.

    2. Then there is our hometown school (FSU), which also happens to be our Alma Mater. You can find out about the school here, and here, and even here.

  • Our Friends

We have a lot of friends, but only one that I know of that has a web page. Check out Donna. She really does a nice job with her page.

If you have a web page and are a friend of mine, e-mail me and let me know, and I will put you on here too.

  • Communicating on the Internet
    1. ICQ is one of the niftiest little programs you can get. It is free to download just by clicking here. It is little program that allows you to see which of your friends are online (provided of course that they are signed up with the company and are added to your list) and then be able to instantly communicate with them via a chat room. If they are not online, you can still send a message that they will get when they come online.

    2. Another great communication program is PowWow. This is another freebee that you can download and put on your computer. With this program you can do chat using the computer keyboard or do voice communication (provided your computer has that capability) and you don't have to go through a server. You can put people in the built in address book and just call them up direct (if they are online). This is great to use in combination with ICQ because you can see when they are online.

    3. iname is a company that will give you a free e-mail box (of course they do have various pay services as well). This is good for any of you out there that think you will ever change your internet server in the future. iName is a relay service that will pass on you e-mail to where ever you ever happen to be. All you have to do is notify the company of your current address. This way you never again have to send out notice to all your friends that your e-mail address has changed.

    4. There is one more internet communication item you ought to know about and it is called faxsave. This is a company that you can use to send faxes through the internet. You simply download their software, install it, get online and register. You can use any word processing software you have to create the fax, then get online and send it using the "print" function of the software. The fax goes to the faxsave company and thier computer forwards it on to the intended destination. Anything you can produce on your computer can be sent (including graphics). This is great for any long distance faxing you may do, but is especially great for international faxing (believe me, I know). Their prices are really good.

    5. Here is a nifty little gadget by the "digital" company. You can send me (or anyone else with e-mail) a voice message by e-mail. To try it out, simply download the netscape plugin here, then run the executable file to install the plugin. After it is installed, come back to this page and use the little player below to create and send the message.

To create and send the message, right click on the player to bring up a dialog box and click on "e-mail headers". Here you can type in the e-mail address of the person you want to send to and the e-mail subject. Then, simply click on the microphone and begin talking (of course you have to have sound capability on your computer). When finished click on the microphone again. You can hear the message by clicking on the speaker icon, then send by clicking on the envelope (all of these things will appear at the appropriate times). If you decide you don't want to send it, just click on the envelope marked with the "X". Messages are sent as regular .wav files, so the person receiving it can simply save the file and play it with whatever audio player they have that is capable of playing them.

Bookmark this page and come here anytime you want to send someone an e-mail voice message.

For more information about this item, or to get information for putting the player on your web page, go to the digital home page.

    6. I have just started getting a little bit into creating my web page and am kind of enjoying it. I have come across a couple of items that may be of interest to those of you who may want to know how I did this. The first item is called HomeSite. This is an HTML editor (HTML is the programming language used for creating pages for The Web). There is a freeware version that can be downloaded. It is a fully functional version of the program (though it is not the most recent). The newer version with more bells and whistles you have to pay for (if you want it). The second item is lessons on how to do it. The very easiest free lessons I have found are at Professional Web Design. They have done it right!!!

    7. If you are interested in putting a voice message on your own homepage, like the one I have, it is necessary to have a sound file. Regular WAV files are too large to be practical. The VOX folks have created a sound compression utility especially for voice. You can download the software to do this here.

    8. Perhaps you saw the banner exchange banner on the home page. This is a service that advertises my page free in exchange for me letting them advertise other people's pages. Nice little trade off, I think. They have connections with some individuals and companies who will make you a banner free, if you are a member of the banner exchange. I had the Tuttle folks make mine. Here is their banner and mine. Nice job, don't you think?

  • Interesting Subscription Services

There are several services that I subscribe to in order to get news and information that is interesting to me. All of these subscriptions are free. For some services you simply send them an e-mail and request to be added to their subscription list. For others, you visit thier homepage and sign up. Then, you get e-mail updates from them as they are sent out. I have made it easy for you. All you have to do is click on the name and you will be able to make your request from here.

    1. Internet For Christians Newsletter is a weekly newsletter that gives information about different Christian groups and organizations. The is a really great resource and I recommend it highly.
    2. International Mission Board News gives you periodic news updates about what is happening with Southern Baptist missions. In addition to their news service, they also have several other subscription services. You sign up at their home page.
    3. Mercury Mail is a news service that allows you to define what kind of news you want to receive and how often. You go to thier homepage to sign up and define your personal news coverage. The e-mail news coverage that is sent are very short synopsis pieces, but there are links to the full story if you want to know more. This is a dynamite service. The news is send only on week days.
    4. The Kleinman Report is a short weekly report about interesting things on the internet. This guy spends a lot of time surfing the web and then tells you what is interesting and good. I have found his reports to be excellent.
    5. If you need a little humor in your day, Bill's Punch Line is just what you need. His jokes are all clean and he manages to get real screamers every day. This comes out 5 9or more) days per week.
    6. Team Anchor Desk is a service that keeps you up with the latest in the computer world. They cover all of the hot topics and are generous with their opinions about the implications of new technology. Their reports are short, but have links to longer articles if you want to know more. Also, they always have links to great software along with evaluations.

I hope you have found these links interesting and maybe even useful. If you come across anything you think is particularly noteworthy, let me know. I am always interested in discovering new things, too.
