We are missionaries affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention International Mission Board. We have served as missionaries for about 15 years.

Our first 12 years were in Japan. While in Japan we worked on the island of Okinawa with the Okinawa Baptist Convention. This was a convention of Okinawan Baptist churches.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain, we felt the Lord leading us to change our field of service. This is actually something fairly unusual for missionaries. After spending the time and energy to learn another language and culture, you usually want to stay there. We had planned to do just that. But with the changing world situation, we felt God's leading to move into this new area. After evaluating the possibilities, we felt led to Latvia.

The first term of missionary service for Southern Baptist missionaries is primarily devoted to language and culture acquisition. Even though this is not our first term as missionaries, it is our first term in Latvia and it is necessary for us to learn a new language and culture. That being said, we are in the last year of this term and are rapidly expanding our areas of ministry.

1. Ministry at Vilandes Baptist Church - Two years ago in December, Vilandes Baptist church was born. The Baptist Union asked Almers Ludviks, one of its pastors, if he would start a new church using this facility. Freddy was asked to work with him as part of the church planting team. Freddy works leading the congregational singing (Vilandes is probably the only church in Latvia where that is done), helping to develop church programming, as taking some teaching and preaching responsibilities.

2. Baptist Seminary - During the seminary's last semester, Freddy was asked to teach a class . This was a practical class in Church Growth principles.

3. Freddy and Friends the radio show has been on the air on the local Christian radio station almost from its beginning. In December of 1993 a Christian radio station was begun in Riga with no programming. They just turned on the music and let it play for 24 hours a day. Then they began developing the programming. In January I was asked to host a program. Currently the show runs on Sunday evenings from 10:00 to 10:45.

4. Preaching - Every fourth Sunday, the Davis family is going to a church outside of Riga for the purpose of ministering in a different place. There Freddy preaches and, along with Deborah and Ken, sings a mini concert.

1. Ministry at Vilandes Baptist Church - Deborah is involved in several important activities at the church. She has played the piano and keyboard from the very beginning. In addition, she is responsible for the majority of the music program for worship. In addition to the music responsibilities, she is teaming up with one of the other women in the church to help get a women's ministry started.

2. For nearly two years Deborah home schooled Ken. This year an International Service Corps worker has come to serve as a school teacher for the Southern Baptist MKs. This has freed Deborah up to become more involved in other activities and to focus more on language study.

3. Sharing - When the Davis family does it's 4^th Sunday ministry, Deborah plays the keyboard and sings as her contribution to the group. In addition, she has the opportunity to share her testimony.
